The Amazing Race

In this episode, we bust out our Sailrite sewing machine to repair our broken mainsail slides. We also discover they are the wrong size, so we just go ahead and replace them all. And, while we are at it, we replace our tell tales too. With the mainsail back on board and tested for functionality, we enter our first ever (and second ever) sailboat race! Darla was worried about crowding at the starting markers, so we stayed towards the rear of the fleet until the race began. Spoiler alert: We did not finish dead last as we suspected we would. We then take a more leisurely sail the next day to unwind from it all.

Wing on Wing

We are back for another season of sailing, learning, upgrading, and repairing. Thanks a bunch for returning! In this episode we replace our mainsheet blocks to make operating the main sheet easier, we go for an awesome sail during which Darla wonders if this “cold” 70 degree sail will be the last cold sail of the season before things warm up, we sail wing on wing, we accidentally jibe, we blow out a sail slide, Steve loses the winter beard, and we get all stoked about our first sailboat race in our own boat only to be let down once again by foul weather.

We plan to make great strides this season towards our goal of becoming full time cruising sailors, so if you haven’t already, please consider subscribing. Also, click the bell to turn on post notifications so you never miss a new video!

Winter Is Coming

After another short hiatus due to weather and a quick trip to Las Vegas, we finally get another sail in. We have no whisker pole and no preventer, so our wing on wing experience is less than desirable. We also use this opportunity to wrap up Season 2 of our journey towards full time cruising. We have learned so much in a short period of time and we are looking forward to next season.

42 Degrees!

Better late than never, we finally get sailing again! After a short hiatus due to circumstances beyond our control, and a quick trip to Pittsburgh to see Metallica, we are once again able to get back out on the water. We were greeted by mixed winds and a chilly 42 degree but sunny day. We also get tired of being wet inside the boat when it rains so we install some port visors. Lastly we tackle a nagging water pump issue which of course results in some shenanigans since we forgot to turn the pump off before removing hoses.

More Sailing More Learning

After several weeks of bad weather and/or ZERO wind we finally get back to sailing! We also reflect on the upcoming end of the sailing season which is rapidly approaching and we take a very quick look at our projects list. There are still many things to do to improve our boat and our sailing skills as progress towards our goal of becoming full time liveaboard sailors.

Victron Battery Monitor Install

This time around the weather gives us a hard time in the form of pouring rain for three days and very high winds. So instead, we decide to install a Victron BMV-712 Smart Bluetooth battery monitor, during which Steve finds himself looking like a red-nosed reindeer. We wonder for a second if the boat will catch on fire when we turn the power back on, and we just sort of hang out around the boat.

Ready, Set, Go!

In this episode of sailing svSomeday, we try, and fail, again, to beat our previous time on the course we raced while crewing on another boat a couple of months back. We decide we are tired of doing projects in the scorching heat, so instead we present a quick primer on the things we have to do to get the boat ready for a day of sailing, and as always, we reflect on what we learned to progress our sailing skills and get us one step closer to becoming full time live aboard sailors.

Ankle Sweat

In this episode of Sailing svSomeday, Steve ponders whether or not ankles are supposed to sweat. We also learn to reef our genoa for the first time and we knock a pretty big project off of our to do list, in the form of installing a refrigerator in the boat. We also have a pretty decent day of sailing, although we do get run off by foul weather towards the end of it.

Ghost Boat

In this episode of Sailing svSomeday, Steve comes to terms with the fact that he can only control wind around 2% of the time, depending on tequila intake, Darla prefers sailing in 15 knots of wind with a reefed main rather then rounding up, and svSomeday performs a tack on it’s own using magical ghost power. From the projects list, we finally get around to installing our Lifesling, we add a tent in the form of some tarps to cut down on heat, and we replace a couple of dock lines that were badly worn. Each time we go sailing or do a project, we learn so much and get one step closer to our goal of becoming full time sailors.

Thanks for watching!

It’s Just Hot!

In this episode of Sailing svSomeday, it’s just hot! The Texas heat is full effect with temperatures reaching 108 degrees and a heat index of 113 degrees. So how do we deal with it? Well, first Darla makes a reversible Sunbrella sun shade that we can attach to the side of our bimimni where the sun is. Next we add an Arctic Cove mister to provide some relief. Then inside the boat we add some Reflectix insulation to the dead lights and some Zarcor CloZure shutters to the port lights.

Also in this episode, for the first time ever, we have guests on our boat while sailing. This means that we have finally reached a confidence level high enough to be able to safely transport other human beings. The possibilities are endless!
