Wind From All 3 Directions

This time on Sailing svSomeday, we have another great sail, even though the heat was sweltering. The winds were mixed in both speed and direction, leading Darla to the conclusion that sailing is difficult when the wind comes from all three directions, and theorizes that is how waterspouts are created. But, before we got to the sailing, we had to get our genoa sail repaired at the sail loft, since we do not have a sewing machine capable of sewing sails… yet. Then there was the challenge of getting it installed back on the furler. Another hurdle was crossed when Steve finally learned how to successfully back out of the slip. From the boat projects list, we only knock out one project this time around in the form of a new TV and antenna for late evening entertainment. Then we reflect on a few things we learned about sailing.

Winds and Losses

Finally, we get our holding tank monitoring installed! We also install a new cockpit table, much to our delight. We give an update on a couple of projects from the list that have failed, and last but certainly not least, we go SAILING. It was a very windy day, so we gave our new reefing setup a run for its money. It worked beautifully, and resulted in perhaps out best day of sailing ever. Now, if Steve could just learn to back out of the slip properly, we would be all set.

Where’s The Reef?

In this episode the wind blows real hard and we realize that we are unable to reef! So we take inventory of what we need to reef and make an attempt to measure how much line we need to rig our reefing. We then revisit our list of boat projects for this season and finally Darla replaces our old crusty traveler with a shiny new one. Yaaay!

…And We’re Back!

…And much like the mighty phoenix, we rise again! We are back after a few of months of un-sail-able weather. In this week’s episode we show you our galley cabinet rebuild (at 100x speed) and install, Steve demonstrates a now necessary tool that permanently lives on our boat in the style of a silly public service announcement, we have a slight issue getting out of our slip, and we finally get a chance to test out our transmission after replacing it over the winter. It feels really great to be back, and we look forward to bringing you more episodes in the very near future.

Success!

In this episode, we tear out our galley in order to access the engine compartment. We then pull out our engine and replace the transmission, and then drop the engine back in. Afterwards the engine started right up, and the transmission worked perfectly. Hallelujah, it is a miracle! We figure we saved at LEAST $4,000.00 doing this ourselves and we gained a ton of experience along the way.

What Now ?

This week we figure we should just go ahead and pull the engine right out of our boat and fix it ourselves, even though we know that is a major undertaking, and we have absolutely no experience whatsoever. Steve goes on a lengthy “investigation” about what it might take to remove the engine, and, we make some delicious quesadillas.

Let’s Just Drive Backwards!

In this episode we start to come to the realization that we may have a serious transmission issue on our hands. If the transmission does not work, we can not go sailing. So we ask for knowledge from the viewers and ponder the possibility of having to seek external help to fix our boat.

Clean Sheets and Lasagna

In this episode, we replace our genoa sheet with a shiny new green one from Cajun Ropes, we make lasagna, and we go SAILING! We finally got our boat up to 6 knots! We were also heeled 15 degrees at the time so it was very exciting for complete amateur sailors such as ourselves. The fun was short lived however when the wind completely disappeared on us (again).
